2016 Governor's Arts Awardee - Joslyn Art Museum Organizational Achievement Award Presented by the Nebraska Arts Council Joslyn Art Museum https://www.joslyn.org/ Joslyn Art Museum was established in 1931 by Sarah H. Joslyn in memory of her husband, George, as a gift to the people of Omaha. Joslyn showcases art representing artists and cultures from antiquity to the present. Its permanent collection includes over 11,000 works with holdings ranging from Renaissance and Impressionist to Western and contemporary art. The collection is particularly strong in nineteenth-century European and American and twentieth-century American art. In addition to the museum's permanent collection, Joslyn presents about nine temporary special exhibitions annually. Exhibitions are at the core of Joslyn's public programming and are chosen to augment the permanent collection and bring to visitors works otherwise unavailable in the region. At the foundation of the museum's mission is a dedication to address the needs and interests of a general adult audience, university faculty and students, K-12 teachers and students, families, youth at-risk and individuals with special needs, and this work is accomplished through programs designed to fit all audiences. The museum aims to provide the public, at all levels of learning, with the skills to understand, appreciate and interact with art. Joslyn’s nearly 20 galleries are showcased in its original 1931 Art Deco building and in the Walter and Suzanne Scott Pavilion, a 58,000-square-foot addition built in 1994 and designed by renowned British architect Norman Foster as his first U.S. commission. Connecting the two buildings is a soaring glass atrium featuring two sculptures by glass artist Dale Chihuly and a café and shop. The museum also features a concert hall, fountain court, education technology gallery, lecture hall, classrooms, sculpture garden and Art Works, an interactive space for art exploration. In 2013, the museum returned to Sarah Joslyn’s original vision of granting free general admission to all visitors, enhancing attendance, audience diversity and community engagement.
