UNITED STATES COURTHOUSE, LOS ANGELES SKIDMORE, OWINGS & MERRILL, LLP 2017 AIASF Design Awards Award of Merit, Architecture The design of the New United States Courthouse is rooted in classic principles of American civic architecture as seen through the lens of 21st Century Los Angeles. The building’s architectural expression is an inextricable union of site topography, functionality, environmental performance, form and democratic principles that honor the public realm. The jury praised the project’s heroic modernism and natural lighting, noting that it is rare to see sustainability expressed so powerfully in the architecture. The design is consistent throughout, with detail carried from the façade through to the courtroom.
