21st Century Realism at the Delaware Art Museum

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

I attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and loved a show there, back in 1981, surveying contemporary American realist artists. I hadn’t seen anything like that since. That is until I went to the Delaware Art Museum on January 17, 2017. Inspired by Robert C. Jackson’s 2014 book, “Behind the Easel”: The Unique Voices of 20 Contemporary Representational Painters, the Delaware Museum’s “Truth and Vision: 21st Century Realism” surveys the state of realistic painting at the start of our new century.

Comments

  1. The means is what makes the quality. That is materials and technique.
  2. Really enjoyed the show and living on the other side of the world it was great to have the opportunity to visit your local art museum, thanks
  3. I was at that show and still have the brochure. It was a one of the first since graduating. Thanks for sharing your video. Loved it.
  4. Great work John!
  5. John thanks for another insiteful video. This was an outstanding exhibit of very talented contemporary realist painters.
  6. Thanks so much for this, John. So many fine artists out there. And kudos to the museum for putting on a show that offers the public the 'shock of reflection'. I was reminded of observations by John Berger, and also of a museum curator's recent concern that visiting students were unnerved by the stillness they found in a room full of paintings. A show like this offers the public the consolation to be found in slowing down.
  7. Great movie!!! And great to see wonderful works by Artists who really can hold a brush!!
