5 Human Errors That Caused Disasters! Description: Humankind have made a large number of disasters during history, and I’m not talking about burning-the-eggs kind of disasters. I am talking about those that threaten to obliterate whole populations of people. The more that man continues attempting to make better versions of themselves at the same time outpacing their neighbors in the name of superiority, then these disasters are pretty much going to remain with us for an eternity. With this being said, prepare to be shocked by these 5 Human Errors That Caused HUGE Disasters! Lets begin! 1. The Disappearance Of The Aral Sea Sitting between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the Aral Sea was one of the largest lakes in the world. Its watershed area spanned Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan and covered 68,000 square kilometers. However, it has been shrinking since the 1960s due to a diversion for Soviet irrigation projects. By 2007, the lake had split into four smaller lakes. Nonetheless, satellite images show that the lake is devoid of water and even referred to as the Aralkum desert. The aftermath lead to shortage of jobs because people could not fish, leading to a higher infant mortality rate. Ban Ki Moon, the former UN secretary General called it one of the worst environmental disasters in history. What do you think? 2. Chernobyl Disaster This is the worst nuclear accident in history. The Chernobyl plant was located near the city of Pripyat in Ukraine. On 26 April 1986, during a systems test, reactor number four experienced a spike in energy and its core detonated causing radioactive materials to be launched into the air. This spread like wildfire. Thirty-one people were killed and the city of Pripyat was abandoned. Today, you’ll see wild plants and flowers in the region. When investigations were concluded, human error was found to have contributed to the disaster. Apparently, before the tests were conducted, an employee had disabled automatic shutdown of the mechanisms. The reactor is now entombed in a large concrete sarcophagus and the area surrounding it is off limits. 3. Three Mile Island Meltdown The worst commercial nuclear power plant accident in the United State’s history happened on 28 March 1979. The cause was a pressure relief valve that was left open leading to a loss of coolant. This went unnoticed for quite some time. In fact, employees on duty believed that instrument’s panels were registering correctly when in fact they were all jacked up. When the leak was discovered, a hydrogen gas bubble formed, which leaked radiation into the air. Tests performed in the region indicated high levels of thyroid cancer though there were no causal link to the accident. After site closure, cleanup started in 1979 and ended 14 years costing a whopping $1 billion. Wow... 4. Bangladesh Building Collapse On the 24th of April of 2013, Rana Plaza, an eight Storey building collapsed in Haka, Bangladesh. A day earlier, the building had been evacuated due to cracks that had been found on its foundation. The garment workers, unfortunately, were forced to return the next day or risk loss of pay. The building’s power had been cut off but the relentless owners started a generator. At 8:57am, disaster struck leaving a trail of 1,129 dead. Amazingly, the search for the living and the dead lasted three weeks. 5. The Navy Poisons Marines And Their Families Marines and their families at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina were allowed to ingest and bathe in contaminated waters of up to 3400 times the level permitted by safety regulations. High rates of breast cancer in males, childhood cancer and birth defects occurred on the base. Though studies conducted on the water showed evidence of contamination, Marine Corps continued to permit use of the water. The wells were eventually shutdown in 1985. More than 70 chemicals were ultimately identified in the water. For this, the military had to pay up to $4 billion dollars in claims.
