More information about the video content bellow: 1. The African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde was founded in 1956, and guerrilla warfare grew increasingly effective. By 1974 the rebels controlled most of the countryside, where they formed a government that was soon recognized by scores of countries. The military coup in Portugal in April 1974 brightened the prospects for freedom, and in August the Lisbon government signed an agreement granting independence to the province. 2. Although Portuguese is the official language, used in mass media, official documents and schools, it’s Creole that’s the lingua franca in Guinea Bissau. The language is known by most Bissau Guineans and it’s a local version or dialect of Portuguese (combined with native languages). 3. Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability since independence, and no elected president has successfully served a full five-year term. Since independence in 1974, every single acting president was either assassinated or deposed by a military coup. This instability contributed to the country’s status as one of the poorest nations on Earth. 4. The land now known as Guinea-Bissau was once the kingdom of Gabú, which was part of the larger Mali Empire. After 1546 Gabú became more autonomous, and at least portions of the kingdom existed until 1867. In the 19th century, it was colonized as Portuguese Guinea. 5. Bissau is an impressive rural metropolis where many of the upscale villas are built according to Mediterranean architecture. The city's name was added to the county name when independence was achieved to avoid confusion with neighboring Guinea. 6. Throughout the 20th century, most Bissau-Guineans practiced some form of Animism. In the early 21st century, many have adopted Islam, which is now practiced by 45% of the country's population. Approximately 19% of the country's population belongs to the Christian community, and 31% continue to hold Indigenous beliefs. 7. The Ghanaians' struggle for freedom in the 1950s inspired the people of Guinea-Bissau to put up their own fight, which succeeded in 1974. Both flags use the popular pan-African colors of Ethiopia.
