A legislative resolution celebrating the diamond anniversary of a Tulsa school was adopted unanimously by the state House of Representatives. House Resolution 1055 by Rep. Eric Proctor, D-Tulsa, commemorates the 75th anniversary of the construction of Will Rogers High School. Built in the late 1930s during the Great Depression with funds allocated in a Works Progress Administration grant, Will Rogers High School "stands as one of the best examples of art deco high school architecture in the United States," the resolution declares. The school encompasses 200,000 square feet of space, the resolution relates. The "elaborate art deco building" was designed to "instill pride, not only in the school itself by its design, function and beauty, but by its reference to" Oklahoma's most famous native son, humorist Will Rogers. While the building itself is "significant," the "true story of the school" is not her "beautiful architecture or unique history," the resolution asserts. "Rather, it is told through the contributions" of her teachers, administration, and graduates. "Will Rogers High School is truly a jewel of both architecture and education for the city of Tulsa," Proctor said. "However, the real blessing for our city and state have been the school's alumni. Nearly 40,000 strong, they have led our nation in military service, entrepreneurship, aerospace, economics, education and entertainment. Their contributions have made our city, state and nation a stronger and better place."
