Abandoned Diner 1931 Red Apple Rest since 2007

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Abandoned Red Apple Rest diner . Built in 1931 with art deco and old style architecture . Some original signs from 1931 still remain . I am only able to tour the outside perimeter as it is surrounded by a fence to keep out vandals .

  1. Been to the Red Apple Rest many times as a kid and a number off times in recent years, I too noticed the modern electrical meter that was drawing more than minimal watts. Also wondered why the structure still stood. I can only surmise it is still being used for reasons best kept confidential.

PS- the bathrooms were on the side
  2. I grew up in Rockland County and this place was part of my childhood. The sign said restrooms and they cost 10 cents to use. before the Thruway was built it was a MAJOR stop for buses and until the early 60s a passenger train stopped too. The had a walk up bar inside and they didn't card! That speaker was one of many. It was used for announcements and otherwise it played WABC
  3. There is an excellent book on the history of the Red Apple, entitled "Stop at the Red Apple,", written by Elaine Freed Lindenblatt, the daughter of Reuben Freed, the founder and, for most of its history, the operator of the Red Apple.

Also, a scene in the 1997 movie, "Deconstructing Harry," was filmed there.
  4. So sad.
  5. That place was cool, would have been nice to see the inside but you can't win them all :)
  6. Oye Vey, never eaten there but that was a regular stop off for my in laws when my father in law played in the tennis circuit. Very Very Jewish area, not sure if the food was kosher or American, my in laws ate either way except Treif also spelled as trayf, treyf, (meaning food not satisfying the Jewish religion.

Thanks for sharing all of your great videos. I moved out of Bergen County in 92 for Naples Florida and now I really miss Jersey and its surrounding areas. Your videos bring me a bit closer to home. Thanks again. 👍😎
  7. Good thing you din't enter, not only they might have had cameras, but also sensors. Chirp
  8. Another excellent video. This place is huge , maybe the back section was used for parties, and things of that nature. The electric meter is running, like you said, it is probably not abandoned. The fence surrounding it is topped with barbed wire, I'm glad you didn't attempt to enter as there might be hidden security cameras . I would not want to see you get hurt or in trouble. I'll bet everything is still inside. I have seen a couple of old restaurant bars near Batsto  in the Pine Barrens area. I usually stop and take pictures but if the area is secluded then I might take a look inside if I can. Take care, waiting for your next video.
  9. Wow, sad to see the old school diners closing. A lot of these style diners closed in NJ as well. Thanks for the videos of these old-time places, enjoy watching them.
  10. Neat :)
  11. Cool diner! Too bad it's in rough condition for the time abandoned, it's in the shape of a 20+ year abandoned building.
  12. Thanks again for all the videos! 😊
  13. That's a big place.
