Type 1 Diabetes can occur at any age, but most commonly is diagnosed from infancy to the late 30s. Type 1 diabetes happens when your immune system destroys cells in your pancreas called beta cells. They’re the ones that make insulin. What Treatments are Used for Type 1 Diabetes? The two goals of diabetes treatment are to make sure you feel well day-to-day and to prevent or delay long-term health problems. Studies have found that only about 35% to 40% of people with diabetes who died had diabetes listed anywhere on the death certificate and about 10% to 15% had it listed as the underlying cause of death.
