Archaeology and The Art-Deco Movement (Futurism)

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Neo-archaeological design of vast colonnade, portraying here the Egyptian “orientalising” subject within the Art-Deco movement of the 1920’s. This neo-archaeological design dominated by pharonic columns and Egyptian geometric motifs, portrays the overtly orientalised typology in the contemporary 20th century Western-Arts movement, as direct result of the excitement spurred by turn of the century archaeological discoveries in Egypt and other ancient cultures alike of the Mediterranean basin. During the 1920s, affordable travel permitted in situ exposure to other cultures. There was also popular interest in archaeology due to excavations at Pompeii, Troy, the tomb of Tutankhamun, etc. artists and designers integrated motifs from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, Asia, Mesoamerica and Oceania with modernist Machine Age elements. Deco was also influenced by Cubism, Constructivism, Functionalism, Modernism, and Futurism. Yet another prospect for how identical themes and typologies in material-culture may be diachronically reaffirmed, reinterpreted and idolised variably by differing peoples through the ages, archaeology is as much relevant in the past as present.
