Art Deco inspired small home design - Nautical Moderne

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

This was inspired by a design I found in a plan book from the early 1930s. I increased the size a bit. The style is sometimes called "Nautical Moderne", as it was inspired by the great passenger cruise liners of the time, with porthole windows and curved balconies. On the ground floor I swapped the locations of the kitchen and bedroom, so that the kitchen faced the street and the bedroom looked out on the garden. This gave it more privacy. I also added a full bath on the ground floor, creating a proper Master Bedroom suite. On the upper floor I gained the space for an additional room. I've shown it open to the stairs and opening out onto roof decks. It would make a great play space for kids. But it could also be enclosed to provide a fourth bedroom if needed. I did the design in Sketchup 8. I've kept the rendering very simple, no shadows, no landscaping, in order to keep the file size down. When I get better equipment I'll flesh out the model. I hope you like it. Please feel free to leave comments.
