Today, the southern end of Miami Beach is called "America's Riviera" evolving over the past century from an uninhabited mangrove swamp to one of the most glamorous tourist destinations on the planet. This transformation has had its ups and downs over the decades. The fabled Art Deco period of the 1920s & 1930s was followed by the post World War II decades of the 1950s & 1960s, when the Ocean Drive neighborhood became crime infested and was known by a less glamorous nickname -- God's Waiting Room, given the abundance of retired persons who were the only residents in the southern end of Miami Beach. The historic preservation period of the 1970s and the appearance of the popular TV series Miami Vice in the 1980s sparked the area's modern turnaround: southern Miami Beach transformed itself into "South Beach" (further abbreviated "SoBe" for even more 'coolness') & the island's renaissance was underway. The rest is history -- and it just keeps getting better and better!
