Pan from Elgin Marbles to visitors STORYLINE: Greece opens its long-anticipated new Acropolis Museum on Saturday, boosting its decades-old campaign for the return of 2,500-year-old sculptures removed from the ancient citadel by a 19th century British diplomat. However not everyone is excited about the opening. Residents of a 1930's Art Deco building near the new museum are worried about plans that their building might be demolished. According to museum officials it - together with another building - spoils the view of the ancient citadel's grandest structure - the Parthenon temple - as seen from the new museum. A plan to demolish the two buildings has opened a heated debate about sacrificing Greece's modern treasures to showcase its ancient history. Residents and architects started an internet campaign to save the buildings and received e-mails of support from around the world. With its pink marbled exterior, the Art Deco building is the most eye-catching along the Dionissiou Areopagitou pedestrian road leading to the Acropolis entrance. It was built by Vassilis Kouremenos, a graduate of Paris' Ecole des Beaux Arts and reportedly a friend of Pablo Picasso.
