Athenium Theatre, Junee, Australia

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

A "work in progress" the rejuvenation of the Athenium Theatre. This video postcard of pictures and music is intended to give an overview of the present situation (January 2011) from an architectural and restoration perspective. The Athenium is typical of the cinemas designed in the late 1920s by specialist cinema architects Kabberry & Chard. It clearly shows their trademark simplified neo classical style. Over the years the Athenium has been altered many times along with some name changes to the 'Broadway Theatre' and later the 'Jadda Centre'. In the mid 1930s art deco and other decoration was added and years later the original lattice ceiling was covered and the proscenium removed entirely, but the basic form and many features of the original building are still in place. 1. I just stumbled across an interesting paper written about how the council wanted to demolish this building to make way for a medical centre.... suspiciously around the time that big supermarkets were possibly going to be allowed to have chemists inside them. Apparently at that same time a big supermarket had expressed interest in setting up in the town.....hhhhmmmm
  2. What a great video. I love the measured style of the shooting, the attention to detail. When will it re open?
  3. I have posted video pictures and music of Junee Junction Jazz Band performing "Ice cream" on utube at various locations. The second picture of the band wearing dinner suits in front of trees is on the stage of Athenium
  4. What a great old building - hopefully serving the people of Junee for many years to come
