His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah and Founder and President of American University of Sharjah (AUS), attended the eighth commencement of the American University of Sharjah on Thursday, June 7, 2007. The AUS commencement was held at the University City Hall, Sharjah, and was also attended by senior government officials, members of the media, and family and friends of the AUS graduating class. His Highness congratulated the American University of Sharjah’s Class of 2007 on their achievements and hard work, and expressed pride and satisfaction at the evolution of AUS into an internationally recognized university. “A decade ago, we raised from this very place for the first time the flag of knowledge and education, announcing the establishment of a university that we hoped would become an institution that would provide the best in the field of education. Today, we have seen our dream realized,” he said. AUS Chancellor Winfred Thompson also appreciated the commitment and hard work shown by the AUS graduates and wished them the best of luck in their future endeavors. Addressing the AUS graduates, he said that education is a social imperative for the 21st century as, today, more than any time in history, the world needs educated men and women as visionaries and as practical thinkers, as enlightened leaders and responsible citizens. Four hundred and twenty eight successful American University of Sharjah’s candidates, 221 males and 207 females, received their undergraduate and graduate degrees from His Highness at today’s AUS commencement ceremony. The breakdown of the AUS Class of 2007 is as follows: • Total number of graduating students: 428 • Number of undergraduate students receiving degrees: 405 • Number of graduate students receiving degrees: 23 • Number of male graduate and undergraduates students: 221 • Number of female graduate and undergraduates students: 207 • Total number of UAE nationals: 62 A breakdown of the AUS graduating class by school/college is as follows: • College of Arts and Sciences: (67 undergraduate and 2 graduate) • School of Architecture and Design:(67 undergraduate and 4 graduate) • School of Business and Administration: (139 undergraduate and 5 graduate) • School of Engineering: (132 undergraduate and 12 graduate) Two outstanding former officials of the American University of Sharjah were bestowed with emeritus recognition by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan on the occasion. Dr. Roderick French, the first chancellor of AUS, was honored with the title of Chancellor Emeritus, and Dr. Leland Blank, former Dean of the AUS School of Engineering, was presented with the honor of Dean Emeritus. His Highness presented the President’s Cup to Mr. Mustafa Haider Ali Fanaswala, a summa cum laude AUS graduate in electrical engineering. This award is given to the graduate with the highest grade point average. Mr. Ammar Al-Sijwani, a magna cum laude AUS graduate in electrical engineering, received the Chancellor’s Cup. This award is given to the graduate with the outstanding combination of academic excellence, general character and service to others. Mr. Al-Sijwani served as the president of the Emirati Club as well as an AUS Diplomat during his years at the university. Stephanie Mahmoud, the American University of Sharjah Class of 2007’s designated speaker at the ceremony, said that her years at AUS were instrumental in preparing her for the real world. “Our four years at AUS have not amounted to just this day—our four years here have helped to set the groundwork for the rest of our lives. We have become more of ourselves, each one of us. We have become more individual with the help of this institution that has allowed us to explore and learn beyond the confines of our classroom walls, beyond the boundaries of geographic location, beyond the limits of the categories that society has placed us in,” she said. American University of Sharjah opened its doors to 285 students who had come to begin their studies with 30 AUS faculty members in 1997. Today, the university is a complex of stunning buildings with more than 4,600 students and a full-time faculty of more than 270 highly trained men and women. Located in University City, Sharjah, AUS is a not-for-profit, independent, institution of higher education formed on the American model.
