Bethune-Cookman University: Redefined for the 21st Century Bethune Cookman University will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the first Phase of a $72 million dollar, 1204 bed student. project. The first phase buildings will be located on the north side of McLeod Ave, West of Walnut Street & East of Martin Luther King Blvd. The first phase resident hall project will be a 4 story building totaling 154,580 square feet and have 658 beds, Relaxing Courtyard, Computer Rooms, Fitness Facility, Lounges, Multi-purpose rooms and numerous study rooms. Both phases of the new project means housing for approximately 1200 additional Students. The University is addressing the need for on-campus housing for current students placed in off-campus housing. Over 700 students where turned away last year from a Bethune Cookman University (“B-CU”) education due to a lack of housing. This project signifies the University’s strong commitment to the students and Daytona Beach’s Community. This is the first phase of growth, master planning for housing and academic buildings, and master planning for energy infrastructure for B-CU. The second phase of the student housing will be an additional 546 bed resident hall, as well as, a new student union building while the master planning for energy infrastructure will address necessary energy capital improvements to accommodate the additional real estate financed through energy savings. Financing for the $72 million dollar housing project comes from TG Quantum, a company outside of Washington DC. The project is expected to create many Construction jobs and indirect jobs for the local economy. The project will be overseen by BECK out of Tampa Florida. The architectural design was created by Torti Gallas and Partners an architect firm in Silver Spring, MD. The new residence halls will be ready for students by the Spring Semester of 2016.
