Building a 21st Century Transfrontier Metropolis | Larry Herzog | TEDxMonumento258

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Tijuana-San Diego represents one of the great urban experiments on our planet — in an era of globalization and shared cross-cultural ecosystems. This “Transfrontier Metropolis” is a living, working transcultural city that straddles the international border. In the future, daily urban flows — commuters, shoppers, the movement of goods and services — could be managed via high tech infrastructure — bus rapid transit, light trains, jitneys, trams, or solar-powered people movers — connecting people and economies, within a more resilient, sustainable region. This border is already a cauldron of innovation, from gourmet cooking, micro-breweries and biomedical manufacturing, to techno-ranchero music, regional art and architecture, but we can do more by moving beyond old stereotypes and cultural misunderstandings to build public places, such as the border, with human design qualities. Larry Herzog is a writer, photographer, international consultant, and professor of urban design and planning at San Diego State University, California. He is recognized internationally as one of the leading experts on the subject of the U.S. — Mexico international border, as well as the impacts of globalization on cross-border relations. He has lectured and taught at many universities around the world, including the London School of Economics, United Kingdom, the Technical University of Delft, Netherlands, the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain and The University of Paris, France. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
