Chicago Civic Opera House Art Deco Masterpiece

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

The Chicago Civic Opera House is a magnificent art deco building that lies along the east side of the Chicago river across from the old Chicago Daily News Building. It opened in1929 it was designed by the chicago firm Graham, Anderson, Probst & White who were responsible for numerous buildings in the downtown Chicago Loop including the art deco Merchandise Mart. Also known as Insull's Throne as it was mostly backed by utilites baron Samuel Insull who was the major backer. He supposedly had a tiff with the New York opera people and wanted the building facing west rather than east. I dunno but it is kind of weird that it faces the river instead of the downtown area. Music Habanera aria from Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen". Sung by Jenny Lee Mitchell.
