Ece Sukan for yoox.com She calls New York her second home, though she's from Istanbul. Her name is Ece Sukan and she is one of Turkey's most influential fashion personalities. After graduating from university with a degree in Psychology, she started working as a fashion editor for Marie Claire Turkey and then became Fashion and Creative Consultant and Editor-at-Large for Vogue Turkey. Today, Sukan works as a freelance stylist and collaborates with numerous international magazines and designers. She also holds workshops in various Fashion Schools and is part of the jury of the Turkish Fashion Association for Young Designers. How did your passion for fashion start? Since childhood. My mother, a theater actress, would always let me dig into the costumes backstage at her plays. I was very much drawn to the characters she played, and I liked trying her costumes on myself as soon as I could. Still today, when I create looks on set, I visualize different characters and mix different elements from imaginary worlds. Do you have a style icon? Who's style do you most appreciate? I admire true eccentric people who have genuine style that reflects their character - people who are not perfect, who do not follow rules. My icons are Diana Vreeland, Zelda Fitzgerald, Peggy Guggenheim, and Edith Beale. How do your Turkish roots influence your personal style? Turkish culture is quite unique in that it lies between the east and west world. Being a "middle land" is exactly its strength. The country's impressive history and contrast makes it interesting and stimulating. My personal style is eclectic, improvised and urban. I live between Istanbul, New York and Milan and have always tried to blend harmoniously my oriental traditions with a more western vision. I've always traveled a lot for work and pleasure. Everything I see has some influence on my taste. Tell us about the video you shot for yoox.com. As a location we chose a beach not far from Miami, in Hollywood. We chose it because it feels very retro and it feels like you are on the set of a movie. All the houses and motels are painted in sorbet colors. I wanted to create some light, fresh, young looks with a retro twist. We had a great time shooting the video with the locals. We met a super fun elderly couple that let us invade their house for our film! I chose some Sixties-inspired looks with colorful stripes and prints that gave the outfits dynamism and a summer vibe. I like matching pieces and accessories in different vivid colors from head to toe! Ece and Vintage.... My love for vintage started when I was studying fashion styling at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. I was always into vintage clothing and antique jewels but in New York I started collecting them. I bought everything in second hand shops and flee markets. Soon after returning to Istanbul I opened my own boutique, Ece Sukan Vintage. It was the first luxury vintage store in the city, with pieces by Mugler, Alaia, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Ossie Clark and many others... What are your musts? I buy art books and magazines and vintage photography. I have huge libraries both in Istanbul and in Milan where I keep them all. I also love my vintage Jaeger-Le-Coultre watch very much. I never take it off. I wear quite often leather pieces, art deco jewellery, hats, and vintage sunglasses.
