Crap Architecture of the 21st Century - The Shard

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

My comments and criticism of the Shard of Glass, a new building under construction at London Bridge in the UK.

Comments

  1. 2 years later: i happen to think The Shard turned out beautifully. It's a wonderful looking building. It just goes to show how much people hate any kind of change.
  2. @DaveBC1 Also you say its eaqually ugly as guys tower, yet they are both polar oppisites architecturally, what is your definition of good architecture? I think the design looks great, its a tall, elegant building that is a modern interpretation of the spires from londons history, the worst you can say about it is that it could look better as part of the city cluster, but theres nothing really 'wrong' with it whatsoever.
  3. @DaveBC1 I did write people but I changed it to freaks for a laugh :) Im no architect but im assuming the facililities on the top floors are important to the building and its design, why not put them at the top, where theres no room for anything else? And tower 42 was on its own, until a cluster formed around it, and the same is true of one canada square, thats just how things go. And the apartments cant be overpriced, funily enough there not priced with the general public in mind
  4. @patsprankcalls - That's probably true but your view is very one-sided: you say "people" like it but "freaks" hate it. That's not very respectful of other people's opinions. On the contrary, I think my points are valid. The pointed shape of the building is inefficient, the steel and glass architecture is uninspired and the shape and height are out of place in the local area. It would have been better placed in Canary Wharf or the City.
  5. @DaveBC1 I guarantee the people who watched this video that like the shard still do, and the freaks that hate it still hate it. You havnt included enough specific information or any kind of new enlightening logic to make your point seem more valid, so keep stroking your ego by pretending people actually care what you have to say, none of the points your arguing with make any sense anyway.
  6. @patsprankcalls - Pat is part of your YouTube name so Pat you are on here, Patty boy. There's no need to swear. Thanks but I don't need your permission to make videos. I wasn't expecting them to stop building it just because I don't like it but nothing will ever change if nobody speaks up.
  7. @DaveBC1 Well fuck it, its already getting built and I think its a great design so yeah keep wasting your time making these pointless videos, it doesnt bother me :) and my name isnt patty you fucking weirdo, or pat for that matter :D
  8. @patsprankcalls - Right back at you, Patty.
  9. Your wrong, and your opinions worth fuck all anyway, congratulations.
  10. @AspM7 - Unfinished or not, I'm against lazy and uninspired architecture. I only comment when I just happen to see them. So only two so far.
  11. Aye... It's not that bad! Look at the Burj Khalifa and the CN Tower... Those stick out like the needle that are jutting out of my eyes.
  12. It is sooooooooo cool u should check out my vids on it! I can not wait for it to be built- simply amazing I LOVE THE SHARD!

  14. @JamieT96 - The issue about the apartments is the reason why I mentioned Pan Peninsula - nice but small and expensive. In Pan Peninsula you couldn't even buy a parking place (@ £10K each!) unless you bought a two bedroom flat or larger. That must limit its attractiveness. I haven't looked into the Shard's apartments in any detail.
  15. @MrBanterMan - It's not ugly, it's out of place. Is that the best they could do?
  16. @JamieT96 - I'm not sure I would describe it as "slave shite" but perhaps built with slave labour. I'd love to know how much of it they've actually managed to rent. It is astonishingly tall but has a similar problem to the Shard - I'd be willing to bet that they are both expensive to heat and cool per square foot compared to conventional, uniformly-floored buildings. And I wouldn't want to be at the top if one of the lower levels caught fire, heaven forbid.
  17. @pabbi25 - The area certainly could do with redevelopment and cleaning up, no argument there, but this inefficient and out of place vanity project is not it. Rather than "exciting and progressive" I would describe it as derivative and uninspired. One of my points is that you won't be able to get to the top because of its design. The proposed viewing area is many storeys down from the top, assuming that it ever opens as a viewing area. Security coincerns have prevented or closed such things.
  18. @DaveBC1 i agree in some ways as it doesn't fit in economically in the time or where its situated, but maybe this is what London needs to keep up its status in the world (not that it needs it), but a proportoned ancient and modern skyline is what London will always be. I got an uncle who is a senior surveyor in Dubai, and personally he thinks building hundreds of skyscrapers (some much bigger than the Shard) is pointless...to be fair to the guy, i agree!
  19. @Lord6of9Uk - Shucks, flattery will get you everywhere. I'm simply using my common sense viewpoint. I would like to tell you that I'm an architect or even an architectural journalist but that's not the case. I like to see some kind of sensitivity to the surrounding environment and some kind of innovation involved in the design and I don't see that here other than "Hey, why don't we make it tall and pointy?". I don't even see it making economic sense, although I presume it must.
  20. @DaveBC1 u seem to know wat ur talking about, but from a architectual amatuer's point of view, it will be an eye catching building cuz of its height and appearance. it should become a london icon in time too.
