The Architectural Imagination United States Pavilion, Giardini 2016 Venice Architecture Biennial Co-Curator Cynthia Davidson explains how the manifesto “The City in the City. Berlin: A green Archipelago”, conducted by Oswald Mathias Ungers and Rem Koolhaas in 1977, inspired the discussion with neighborhoods and the design process of the twelve architectural speculations. Davidson emphasizes the power of architecture to address the urgent social and environmental issues of the 21st century urban landscapes of decay and wilderness ― in Detroit and elsewhere. United States Pavilion, Giardini 2016 Venice Architecture Biennial“. The birthplace of the automobile industry, the free-span factory floor, the concrete paved road, and Motown and techno music, Detroit was once a center of American imagination, not only for the products it made but also for its modern architecture and modern lifestyle. The Architectural Imagination is an exhibition of 12 speculative architectural projects designed for specific sites in Detroit.” www.thearchitecturalimagination.org/ Interview by Bettina Schürkamp, architect and architectural journalist.
