Video from: July 4, 2014 http://street-driver.com/ The East end of Belle Isle has many features and attractions, including the Blue Heron Lagoon and wetland, the Belle Isle Practice Center for golf, the all marble, Art Deco, Albert Kahn designed William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse, and Nature Zoo. The Blue Heron Lagoon is a 41-acre wetland on the east end of the island facing Lake St. Clair. The Free Press reported on June 3, 2013 that $1.5 was being provided to improve the lagoon area through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a federal grant program designed to address areas of concern in the Great Lakes region. A pedestrian bridge has been added, the lagoon is now open to allow the river to run through it, areas that allow baby fish to develop have been improved, breakwaters added to slow the current between the pier and land from the river flow and large freighters' wakes, and the peninsula constructed in the lagoon is having additional submerged and emerged plants planted on it to improve the habitat and develop a biosystem that will support a greater variety of wildlife. Just to the left of the lagoon is the Belle Isle Practice Center, a place to practice golf. It includes a 30 bay full length driving range, a grass tee, 3 putting greens, 2 large chipping greens with 4 sand traps, and a short, but challenging 5-hole course. The William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse opened in 1930 as a navigational aid for boats and freighters going between Lake St. Claire and the Detroit River. It was designed by the Albert Kahn architectural firm and is the only Art Deco lighthouse and the only all marble lighthouse in the United States. It stands 80 feet tall and houses an 11,500 candlepower light said to be visible up to 15 miles away on Lake St. Clair. The memorial was built in honor of William Livingstone, a prominent Detroit resident in the early 1900s and leader in the shipping and navigational industry responsible for many transportation and navigational improvements to the Great Lakes.
