Environments for 21st Century Learning: Ron Hoffart at TEDxWestVancouverED

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

"We are always learning; that's what so great about the work we do!" This viewpoint has energized Ron from his studies in Architecture at the University of Manitoba, where he graduated with honors and the RAIC medal. Ron obtained national and international urban and facility planning experience in Montreal, Winnipeg, Malaysia and New York. Ron joined Graham Hoffart Mathiasen Architects in 2000. Ron is proud of his work on two significant high schools, University Hill Secondary School at UBC and Centennial Secondary School, in Coquitlam, both of which have focused on the transition to 21st Century Learning principles. Recently, he has completed courses with San Diego State University and has received a Certificate in Educational Facilities Planning and the CEFPI designation: REFP. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. You know, I wasn't even watching the video, my eyes were closed. He calculated every idea he presented with precision. The Marshmallow test, the 3 criteria (starting with 2nd, then 3rd, THEN the 1st) were poignant and highly effective. He handed out marshmallows to strengthen his point, and before he could get to the end of his speech, I had already known WHO the audience was supposed to be investing in. That was the most thorough and succinct motivational speech I've ever watched
  2. I can't disagree more and hate the idea of the "teacher controlling the classroom". This is the only time in life that students will have to solve problems in an independent study so no wonder they see school as not having any relevance to their lives. I don't say that easily..I am a high school principal.
  3. having been a student recently.. groups sucks please stop making us collaborate. it means 2 people do all the work rest leach
  4. I am not sure about moving the teachers out of the classroom. Many of the best classroom management techniques are based around the teacher making the classroom into a place for learning. This requires the teacher to control the classroom.
  5. In the future we will probably have information transfer straight to the brain without any effort..
  6. there is lot to be bothered by here, but mostly its being a poor teacher of the idea of teaching lol. Still what he is getting at ultimately is the importance of how we should continue to change the meta of what students need for the new era.
  7. This guy needs to work on his presentation, IMO. I couldn't stay focused on what he was talking about. His reliance on the projector made it worse since the viewer is given no clear shot of the slides.
