Experiencing Bandung

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

The film is an attempt to establish the notion of horizontality through Bandung architecture. It begins with a scene that suggests the beginning of a journey with cars and trees flashing by. The notion of horizontality is foreshadowed by the black electric cables that lead up to the Albert F. Aalbers' Streamlined Art Deco-styled buildings like the 'Bjb Bank' and the 'Savoy Homann Hotel'. The camera follows the elevation of the buildings that have distinct horizontal bands created through the various levels for the 'Bjb Bank' and the hotel corridors and windows for the 'Savoy Homann Hotel'. Subsequently, the film explores a deeper notion of horizontality beyond surfaces by looking at spatial horizontality within a building. This is introduced by the long corridor that stretches out in front of the viewer in 'Bandung Institute of Technology' (ITB) and the continuous space behind the horizontal windows in the ITB hall, subtly hinted by the flapping curtains that both reveal and conceal. In the 'Gedung Sate', the viewer is first guided through the long process of entering the building, building up suspension prior to the actual experience of the space within. Once inside, the viewer gains a better understanding of how the long horizontal wings seen from the front elevation of the building translates into elegant, long corridors within. The final scene for the 'Gedung Sate' is the aerial view from the top of the building that multiples the scale of horizontal spaces into the scale of city planning with structures aligning to the North-South axis. Towards the end, the film plays back the same scenes as the front, depicting movement on the road again -- but this time to mark a departure. The film closes by reiterating the motif of the horizontal cables that fade into fine lines against the sky.
