Extreme transformer home in Hong Kong: Gary Chang's 24 rooms in 1

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Gary Chang has lived in the same 32 square meters (344 square feet) for nearly his entire life. Nearly 40 years ago, he moved into the tiny apartment with not only his parents and 3 younger sisters, but they rented a room to a tenant. During his childhood the space was divided into several small rooms- kitchen, bathrooms and 3 bedrooms (Chang slept on the couch). In 1988 when his family moved out (into something bigger), Chang bought the place from the landlord for $45,000 and began his experiments in small space design. Today, at first glance, the small space appears a fairly average open studio, but with pulls on handles, walls slide across steel tracks, Chang can have a "maximum kitchen", a guest bedroom, a library, dining room, laundry-room and even a spa: one walls slides to reveal an extra-large Duravit bathtub. His home is tricked out with a wall-sized movie screen, a shower with color therapy and massage that doubles as a steam room, but Chang argues that the moving walls are fairly low-tech. And while he can control his appliances with his smartphone he usually prefers the manual option. Chang is now an architect (Edge Design) with a focus on micro-apartments. *Cameraman Johnny Sanphillippo also films for the site Strong Towns: http://www.strongtowns.org/ Gary Chang's Edge Design: http://www.edgedesign.com.hk Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/extreme-transformer-in-hong-kong-gary-changs-24-rooms-in-1/

  1. Looks like blade runner! I love this design :)
  2. Only thing that I would improve in this apartment is the feng shui: a few plants, wooden panels and some rugs would convert this cold sterile space into a home, also some natural lights too. I'm guessing it's all metallic for the easy maintenance and cleaning. But I would find it hard to not get depressed in that place. Still, maybe he doesn't spend too much time in there.
  3. This is like the public library in downtown Vancouver lol, crazy! But may be the conclusion! I love and lucky live in a big country!!
  4. in the center of the city it's perfect for low cost why not, even to live or rent it's worthit
  5. This has some pretty strong ghost in the shell cyber-punk vibes!
  6. Crap, I just convinced myself that renting was the smarter choice because of the reduced risk and mobility it provides. But I also want a house that moves. Impressive how he managed to utilize that space in such a creative way.
  7. Sorry, but this is a high-tech warehouse, but not flat for life. The irrational waste of money.
The room is rectangular shape with panoramic window.
There could be a cozy apartment with a kitchen, combined bathroom & toilet, dressing room and a small living room-bedroom.
STANDARD one-bedroom apartment in the Soviet Union had an area of 34m2.
Now, these apartments are popular among young families and Russian designers create a very comfortable redevelopment, where you can not only live, but also to invite guests.
    "Less is better!"
  8. i like the yellow windows
  9. is this earthquacke proof? Good Game earthquake?
  10. This is amazing
  11. i love these ideas but my only concern is how do they hold up lets say during an earthquake or something? will the walls get stuck possibly become a hazard and you cant escape? not to be negative but these are things i think about... :P
  12. im sorry but i have to point this out. if you turn on the English subtitle and watch it gives you a whole another entertainment. try.
  13. I agree, the tracks truly are papaya tree!
  14. how square feet?
  15. the walk-in closet and bathtub won my heart x"D
  16. This will leave your mouth open. The jaw-dropping idea of living in a small space downtown Hong Kong.
  17. When i read the title, i thought it was a rich guy that bought 24 apartments and put them all together.
  18. he doesnt want you to copy the design, that's why its dark. im guessing there are bright LEDs light in there hehe
  19. the problem is I think it is practical for only one person. people with family won't be easy to live in
  20. I think I would forget some of those rooms!!!! 😂
