The manga, first serialized in 1989 under the subtitle of The Ghost in the Shell, and later published as its own tankōbon volumes by Kodansha, told the story of the fictional counter-cyberterrorist organization Public Security Section 9, led by protagonist Major Motoko Kusanagi, in the mid-21st century of Japan. Animation studio Production I.G has produced several different anime adaptations of Ghost in the Shell, starting with the 1995 film of the same name, telling the story of Section 9's investigation of the Puppet Master. The television series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex followed in 2002, telling an alternate story from the manga and first film, featuring Section 9's investigations of government corruption in the Laughing Man and Individual Eleven incidents. 2013 saw the start of the Ghost in the Shell: Arise original video animation (OVA) series, consisting of four parts through mid-2014. The series was recompiled in early 2015 as a television series titled Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture, airing with an additional two episodes (one part).[1] An animated feature film produced by most of the Arise staff, titled Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie, was released on June 20, 2015. A live-action American film of the same name was released on March 31, 2017.

Comments

  1. section 9 is an anti-cyber terrorist wetworks squad
  2. the people defend the casting of Ghost in the Shell are the same people who cry at the idea of a black Santa Claus
  3. when you need a organ transplant you get what's available, if you need a prosthetic leg you get what's in stock. everything is not some type of racial conspiracy. your reaction is racist, not the movies. the futuristic city is made up, it's a combination of city set in the far future.
  4. Hahahahahaha! That was funny with the head thing!
  5. I don't understand why there are people who hate the fans of the original? How can you hate fans for hating the movie for it turning out to have no deep reasoning to have tons and tons of questions afterwards like the original did. Haters argue because the original was "artsy" and didn't at all tackle very well all these philosophical questions that people had after the original. That maybe it would have been too boring and a failure if it was pure talking and not enough action and no one would want to see that. To that I argue... Well then why the fuck was Ex Machina and Arrival EXTREMELY praised? Two movies that MADE you have questions. It didn't ASK YOU DIRECTLY. These two films have different meanings to different people and there is no "right or wrong" answers because the director/screenwriters know that that is the whole point. Even if Arrival was a book and it tried its hardest to be like it, like it IT WAS NOT. It leaves you asking much more different questions than those who have read the book only. Ghost in the shell I strongly believed was going to the be the next amazing philosophical film to have come out and get praised by how different/kinda same leaving you to ask the same question after watching Blade Runner and Ex Machina. It already had pretty great cinematography like the rest of these films, but the director/screenwriter was too afraid and believed people weren't ready for it and how heavy it could get like the rest of the films I stated. Even though heavy thinking movies are slowly being made and put out there often.
  6. in terms of it's flaws this movie was like Batman V Superman, but with a racial controversy. even that Grace Randolph said as much without saying it by listing that this movie had identical problems (nothing was earned, failed to establish characters so why should we care when anything happens to them, shockingly unsophisticated even though it presents the material as sophisticated) and identical strengths (it looks good, maybe a good performance from one or two actors, nothing else).
  7. meh, movie sucked. it was a dressed up version of Bourne Identity. it was dumb, predictable, put the Section 9 team as background filler and the casting choices in most of the roles were bad. where the castings weren't so bad, the characterization was bad. why the hell was Aramaki the only one speaking Japanese? couldn't he just speak English? movie was boring and dumb. anime is an already stronger medium for creative freedom in visualization and there is largely no point adapting anime to film. this is the real reason why most turn out bad, they're taking works that were good in that medium and translating to a medium (film) less capable of realizing the imaginative and creative power that animation can do with ease and greater efficacy. that's not to say all anime cannot be adapted or adapted well, but it has to be adapted properly, as in the core of the work needs to require it to be on film, not just a shot for shot copy. there are some anime that can be adapted well IMO. most Gundam series, Robotech/Macross (I do believe this is happening), Appleseed (the Oshi work those Paramount idiots should have chosen and it has no "whitewashing" controversy to dance around). but the real issue is stupid suits and stupid directors that don;'t know the medium or care to prioritize making a good film over a namesake cash in. like GITS is a big IP anyway, it's not.
  8. Dam my homies ecomog loved it but you didn't what to think...hmmm
  9. Original film came out in 1995 and is a million times better.
  10. Hating on this film for having a WHITE actor playing a white robot engineered in japan is the zenith of how our society is returning back to tribalism.

"In the near future: Corporate networks reach out to the stars, electrons and light flow throughout the universe. - The advance of computerisation, however, has not yet wiped out nations and ethnic groups."

What does it mean to be human if your body is plastic? My brain can be in a female attack helicopter body but would I not still be "human" if i dont have a dick or pussy? or just being WHITE?

SJW really do hate white people. It's even sicker to think they HOLD everyone else to a LOWER standard than white folks. They don't hate on blacks playing in Romeo and Juliet. They don't hate on Asians taking out all the Germans and replacing ALL of them with Asians in Attack on Titin live movie.

The racist SJW that hate this movie for having a white person in it should be mocked publicly
  11. I agree with you Jody there is no depth, I expected a flash back or something about her past but hell nah & yea why cast Scarlet? There were multiple Asian actors in this, true they all did good but change Scarlett & some of the other worthless actors
  12. I think, but this is just me, Aramaki knew he was being watched by the Hanka goons so it wasn't like he was shot in the head when they started shooting but more like he quickly ducked down to his bullet proof briefcase just as the shooting starts. Though I don't remember him doing any somersaults, just him coming out of the car with the briefcase covering him and him shooting back at the goons...

That aside, I do agree with you, the movie is shallow as hell, good visuals but seriously empty... to me, it felt like the movie is making an excuse to put ScarJo as Motoko... like, that's the freaking plotline... the plot of the movie is to be an excuse to put ScarJo as Motoko... overall, not really a good movie for me, definitely weak.
  13. I agreed with you (almost) 100%, Jody. You said a lot of things in your review that even I mentioned in my review for this movie. Always be real on your channel, man.
  14. Imagine if they took a black couple in chains, plucked their souls out of their bodies and put them into white Caucasian bodies against their will. They actually did that in the movie :(
  15. You really need to see the 1995 anime! Some things they took straight from it (but changed it to fit this film)

And yea, I agree with the white washing, but in the anime, IIRC the brain was from a child who was able to choose her shell.
  16. This movie got beat out at the box office by Boss Baby. That's just sad. I doubt we'll see any more hollywood anime movies in long time.
  17. If you've read the original Ghost in the Shell manga, than you'll realized why this new film was made the way it was as well as the 1995 animated feature. Both adaptations were dumbed down because of the complexity to the original source material or "manga" that came out in the late 80's.

Not sure why, everyone is focusing on the 95' anime because it did the same exact thing Hollywood did with this new film. I like both by the way because there's no way your going to be able to actually adapt Ghost in the Shell into a live action movie for under 2 hours that people will be able to properly understand and follow. Hell, the original anime is hard to follow alone and it's barely an hour long.

The actual animated tv series "Stand Alone Complex" and "2nd Gig" did a way better job at adapting the source material and maybe it's because the format gives you more room to develop the story and characters like a comic (manga) does. The new prequel series "ARISE" does something similar too.

And the white washing bullsh*t is ridiculous. Chief Aramaki is the only character in Ghost in the Shell that looks Asian (Japanese), you can't honestly believe the Major looks Asian with a straight face. The Major in manga looks like a pop singer from America and she was funny and hilarious, not moody and cold like both anime and live action film made her out to be.
  18. This was one of the most boring and uneventful movies I've seen this year. It didn't even feel like a movie. It was more of a tech demo than an actual movie. Still liked it better than Kong Skull Island though. Barely.
  19. As with anything that ends in its claws, hollywood dumbs up the shit so it can become fast food for the eyes and the mind, cause that is too difficult to digest with our western minds, right?
This japanese animes originally have many layers, at emotional, psychological, personal and social lebels, and they are very well rounded and intertwined.
This was a mcdonalds version with a hot feminist actress of the moment. Pity.
  20. Actually, the main character in the source material was even more robot-like than Scarlet Johansen was, but you felt for her when she questioned her own humanity (usually through bizarre arguments with Batou).
