GREECE, ancient (13th century) Byzantine abandoned church outside of ATHENS

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

GREECE, ancient Byzantine abandoned church, ATHENS: Let's visit, briefly, this ancient Byzantine church, located around 60 kilometers south of the Greek capital of Athens. It s abandoned and lonely but its architecture is so beautiful, I estimated that it was built around the 13th century AD. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com

  1. Greek Orthodox churches are beautiful inside. Sad that this one is dripped of everything inside.
  2. I love history and hope you show us more.
  3. Do you have an address for this church?
  4. Absolute Gem that little church. Just think of all the stories it could tell from the people of so many generations that have passed through it. Love the angel at 4:41/2
  5. Agreed a great pity that such beautiful old churches are being neglected but unfortunately this seems to be a big problem all over including here in the UK. If congregation size reduction is an issue perhaps one solution may be deconsecration and conversion for other use such as for housing or commercial enterprise with the proviso of retaining as much of the original architecture and decoration as possible ? This has been carried out here in the UK with some success. Anything short of abandonment to decay is surely preferable ?
  6. Magnificent video of this apparently abandoned Byzantine Church approximately 800 years old located approximately 60 Km south of Athens in Greece in an area called Suniyon
The architecture of this church both inside as well as outside is simply magnificent.
It is unfortunate that the windows in the church (except for one) have been removed allowing all the elements to enter the building. It is amazing that after all these years
the building is still standings even though it is in great need of repairs.
It is amazing that the candle holders still remain in the abandoned.
The tile floor is simply exquisite and well kept.
I am surprised that they had electricity in the building that is some 800 years old.
As you mentioned this building survived at least one earthquake.
Lovely and very informative video !
Vic, about how many worshippers would you estimate this building held when it
was being used as an active church. The building is extremely small, although
    magnificent in structure.
  7. So nice presentation, dear Vic!!
  8. PEACE is every step...yeep that's Greek...breath in breath out...magic spot...THNK's*****
