Grit: the power of passion and perseverance | Angela Lee Duckworth

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success. 1. Self control is included in grit
  2. Kendrick Lamar?
  3. Grit comes from within..plain and simple. You do or do not.
  4. I read her book. It's incredible motivation.
  5. Blank-slateism is pseudo-science.
  6. My co-authors and I have recently published a meta-analysis of the empirical work done on grit - particularly its relationship to success, performance, and related personality traits. Our paper which is forthcoming in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, can also be found here: https://www.academia.edu/25397556/Much_Ado_about_Grit_A_Meta-Analytic_Synthesis_of_the_Grit_Literature.
Our findings - based on a synthesis from 88 independent samples and over 66,000 individuals - show that grit is only weakly related to performance and success, thatt grit is so strongly correlated with conscientiousness that grit appears to simply be a relabeling of conscientiousness, and that grit explains almost no unique variance in success and performance. We also find quite substantial statistical errors in past work in this area. For example, there is no evidence that perseverance and consistency of interest should be combined into an overall grit construct. Similarly, the importance of grit was substantially overstated (in one case 30 fold) due to a statistical misunderstanding in two of the original articles on grit.
  7. BULLSHIT
  8. Talks about grit and perseverance despite quitting a difficult and very well paying job to be a teacher. Hypocrite.
  9. She is annoying. She got her Phd to preach people about common sense.
  10. What a fantastic explanation! Thanks Angela.
  11. LOL. love all the reasons people are "here" .

I am here because of an Email.

However, will post to FB. as there are tons of discouraged souls out and about, or worse under a rock..looking for a little encouragement, a digital hand on the shoulder.

Every little bit helps...whether it is personal faith or sheer personal effort., it is better than giving up.

In a extraordinarily unique way YouTube reminds us, we are not alone.

Especially those conscious enough to share their positive thoughts or the millions of self help videos from mentally stabilizing, to melting plastic...and making... odd things.

Speaking of odd things..we have built an entire house with the help of YouTubers.

So thanks Angela, we can always use more...Grit.

  14. Thank you so much for sharing this!!

I'm a college student and recent events have left me disheartened and unmotivated. I'm struggling with motivation to get by everyday. And I'm trying to 'improve' my grit. This video albeit short has helped me regain my sense of purpose at least a little bit.

Also, thank you fellow commenters for sharing your stories! It has been insightful and inspiring. 😊

    Thank you!
  15. I just realized that most of the books that I've read have the same notion of grit. But it was rephrased by other words.
  16. Guys, that's news... Who would've thought that working hard and having passion leads to success?
  17. Looks like Someone is banging hwe
  18. Samuel Smiles wrote pretty much the same thing, but rather better, 150 years ago, in Self-Help: With Illustrations of Character, Conduct, and Perseverance.
