The towers stand at 746 ft. tall, or about the hieght of a 50 story building. And the main span rises above the water on average 220 ft., depending on the tides. It cost 35 million dollars to build, and was financed by local bonds sold to resisdents of San Francisco and surrounding counties. No federal funds were used for constrution. Joseph B Strauss was the Chief Engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge, and is honored with a statue in the main plaza at the bridge. Architect Irving F. Morrow who was the inspiration behind the Art Deco facade and the iconic "International Orange" color of the bridge finally got his due with a plaque that was placed on the south tower in his honor.
