Genetic Engineering and Diseases – Gene Drive & Malaria

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

We have the choice to attack one of our oldest enemies with genetic engineering. But should we do it? Support us on Patreon so we can make more videos (and get cool stuff in return): https://www.patreon.com/Kurzgesagt?ty=h Kurzgesagt merch here: http://bit.ly/1P1hQIH Get the music of the video here: soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2cJQIsk bandcamp: http://bit.ly/2dj4np0 http://www.epic-mountain.com Big thanks to James Gurney and Roya Haghighat-Khah for their help and advice with this video! 1. One thing they forgot to mention was that we can't just kill the mosquitoes,
1 only females do it to lay eggs.
2 they are pollinators when not giving the SUCC
3 food sources for 1001 different animals
  2. U can kill all the mosquito but we killed like 20 species durin a life time
  3. This sounds like Jurassic Park👌👍
  4. "should we use it?"

i like to think that this answer is obvious, OF COURSE WE SHOULD! eliminating Malaria would be HUGE and would save millions of lives!
  5. I think the humans must not play with mother nature. Every time the consequences are far worse than the cure. Other ways must be explored, for example by enhancing the level of life of the most attacked population.
  6. That sounds a lot like playing God
  7. יוחאי האח
  8. I say we use it after we make precautions
  9. Well it's never nice to get a mosquito bite even if you don't get ill from it, so mosquitos not getting parasites would mean the population of then would thrive. Which wouldn't need be nice for me since every summer I get loads of rashes from allergies to the bite from a mosquito.
  10. Regarding 5:20, I thought it was proved with research that the plague was an airborne disease, and not transmitted by fleas. Is that research wrong or too little to stand on, or was the video released/prepared before the release or acceptance of that research? Someone please help, I'm dying of de-information!
  11. Not using it, we are slowly gonna die. Using it, in the worst case will just fasten the process. I think its worth it...
  12. Freaking work on taking out of the mosquito' dna its dart !! A mosquito sting might always hurt me more than even get the malaria
  13. We should do it soon and get it right
  14. use crispr.
  15. My parents had malaria but they still have it but it's just not that bad so my family can't donate blood
  16. A penny saved is a penny earned.
A penny not saved is a penny wasted.
A life saved is a life given.
    A life not saved is...?
  17. I say we pull the blade from its rock and slay malaria CRISPR may save us all, we only need precision and attention to detail to save the human race, mosquitoes, and millions more
  18. PLEASE GET RID OF LYME DISEASE!!!!
Here in Canada there are so many ticks in forests now...
  19. I wouldn't modify it because the risk of mutation is big I would suggest trying it on 1 and paying some test subject to see if he gets it
