The eye-catching Asheville City Building, completed in 1928, rises from a marble foundation and is capped by an octagonal roof tiled in bright terra cotta. One of many notable Art Deco buildings in the city, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also on the register is the Grove Park Inn, constructed in 1913 of granite stone culled from nearby mountains. No itinerary of things to do in Asheville is complete without a side trip to the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Explore a slice of the ridge up close, selecting from popular local activities such as hiking, rafting, biking and horseback riding. JDRF walk gives people hope for future free from T1D. People walk hopeful to find the cure. Whole families and friends joined the walk and walk up the hill to fundraise and support JDRF research. People believe, that the ultimate cure can be found and their kids and future generations will be free from T1D. It’s no picnic to live with T1D 24/7 so the disease should be cured as soon as possible. More people walking with JDRF walk, more money will be fundraise and the sooner the cure will appear. Walking with JDRF is a great fun and exciting. All people around you know what it is to be a T1D person and struggle for your life every second. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation. If you live with T1D, you spend a lot of time thinking about your blood-sugar levels now and worrying about the complications that T1D may one day bring. You don’t want anyone else you love to ever know the physical, emotional and financial toll this disease takes. You want a cure. So does JDRF. And we are committed to funding the development of new therapies and treatments to keep people with T1D healthier, longer, until that cure is found. That’s why we invest in multiple therapeutic approaches to cure, prevent and treat T1D. We identify and invest in promising therapies in their early stages, helping researchers pursue innovative ideas and approaches.
