Italian Art Deco in the heart of Cape Town

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Our location this week is an Italian-style villa built in the art deco era, and inside, it’s a wonderland of mid-century design that you just have to see for yourself. The house’s original owner was an Australian senator who had travelled through Italy on his way to South Africa, and was so impressed with the architecture of Tuscany, that he wanted a Florentine villa of his own. The neo-classical Italian Ville, built in the 1920's, features an impressive cathedral like dome in its entrance, highlighting the original ceilings throughout the house. Current owners Michael Oldfield and Sang Fung have put their own personal touch on it though, through their love for art and Sang's Chinese heritage. Every room in this unconventional house is different, making it a constantly changing gallery of modern and mid-century design. The house also boasts an impressive set of collectors items, from art deco chairs to a Lionel Smit sculpture. With a 360º view of Table Mountain, the harbour and the city, this is one house that will truly take your breath away. Don't miss this Art Deco masterpiece on Top Billing this Thursday at 7:30pm on SABC3. http://www.topbilling.com/
