London entered the 20th century at the height of its influence as the capital of one of the largest empires in history 3. During World War I, London experienced its first bombing raids carried out by German zeppelin airships 4. The Interwar period saw London expanding faster than ever before facilitated by the growth of the rail network and widening car ownership 5. But it suffered severe unemployment during the Great Depression of the 1930s 6. It was also home to Britain's suffragettes such as Emmeline Pankhurst who campaigned for women right to vote 7. During World War II Blitz, London suffered severe damage by the bombs of the Luftwaffe killing some 30,000 people 8. The raid of December 1940 became known as the Second Great Fire of London as a firestorm destroyed many historic buildings 9. Shortly after the war , in the summer of 1948 London held the Summer Olympics at the original Wembley Stadium 10. Starting in the mid-1960s London became a centre for the worldwide youth culture , exemplified by Carnaby Street 's Swinging London 11. London's role as a global trendsetter was strongly revived in the 1980s during the new wave and punk eras 12. In the mid-1990s this was revived to some extent with the emergence of the Britpop era 13.
