MoMA PS1's Mushroom Tower | Hy-Fi by The Living

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

For MoMA PS1's Young Architect Program, David Benjamin and the architecture firm, The Living, utilized cutting-edge bio-design technologies to create a completely organic, compostable tower. The winning structure is composed of discarded cornstalks and mushroom material, and used zero energy in the construction process. http://thelivingnewyork.com/hy-fi.htm Read more: http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/blog/hy-fi-the-livings-local-sustainable-10000-brick-mushroom-tower-at-moma-ps1 ___ SUBSCRIBE to The Creators Project: http://bit.ly/Subscribe_to_TheCreatorsProject SUBSCRIBE to The Creators Project Newsletter: http://bit.ly/HhxuUN ___ The Creators Project is a partnership between Intel and VICE: http://thecreatorsproject.com/ ___ Check out our full video catalog: http://youtube.com/user/TheCreatorsProject/videos Facebook: http://fb.com/thecreatorsproject Twitter: http://twitter.com/creatorsproject Tumblr: http://thecreatorsproject.tumblr.com/

Comments

  1. This is great. Its innovative and interesting. I'm surprised by the negative comments. Get off your laptop and go and change the world yourself.
  2. is the material biodegradable?
  3. I hope there are plans to burn on Guy Fawkes Day :) I like the shroom ideas tho!...
  4. If there was only a strong, organic material the grew abundantly, hmm... like wood? Cool idea, not practical at all.
  5. the sculpture is gray but if you lick it ... oh yeah
  6. any ideas about  sweater's  brand?
  7. personally, I really enjoyed his scarf
  8. I love the concept. A little disappointed with the finished result but still honest concept
  9. yeah, sure you do everything right. same with taking cheap labor force that is not from 150 miles radius.. more likely from 15000 miles radius.
Always great to see here on vice architecture hippies...
  10. no roof?
  11. where do hipsters like him find those fucked up outfits to wear...
  12. I recently went to a building workshop that worked with similar principles. Yes, a lot of it is experimental, but this is how you start changing things. :)
  13. looks interesting, vague presentation.

    one ugly sweater
  14. David Benjamin and the architecture firm, The Living, are the HOPE for the future: I see them as the new saviours of the world for the 21st century - amidst all the war and destruction of the environment that rages about us, he and his like are building a world in which our children and grandchildren can grow up living a full creative joyful life, in which each person's creative and playful potential can expand, and at last learn to live in harmony with our fellow creatures and natural environment. I am SO GRATEFUL to them!
  15. All materials will always have some form of embodied energy especially when it's being "manufactured".  SO to say no energy required is not technically true.
  16. Again shows the problem with these immense architectural renderings and visualizations. Am I the only one at first exited when I saw the marvelous red bricks and the gleaming crown, and then have that idea shattered when the sickly pale bricks, the ridiculous silver top and a structure that looks sagging and worn-down from the beginning? The idea is great, and the vision important, but surely the realization was somewhat sketchy? Am I missing something here?
  17. What the fuck is he wearing?
  18. не понял я - вот на фига????
  19. There will be one way of two humanity will make their structures: eider homes will be built by robots, or they will grow themselves.
  20. Great idea, shame about the jumper...
