This excerpt from the NFSA's digital restoration of 'Naming the Federal Capital of Australia, March 12th 1913' is accompanied by 'Yandool' by Stiff Gins, from the album 'Wind and Water' (courtesy of Stiff Gins - Nardi Simpson and Kaleena Briggs - and Rob Scott, Source Music). For Australians in the 21st century, the absence of indigenous culture in this film is particularly startling. This edit of the film addresses this absence by including a song in Wiradjuri, the traditional language of Kaleena's people. The rich harmonies not only transport audiences to a world of joy, spirit and song, but potently articulate a continuous indigenous presence in Australia which began long before 1913. This four-minute version will be screened on Sunday 10 March 2013 at 'Imagining the Capital: Canberra on Film': a stage show featuring film, live music and performance - including a special appearance by Stiff Gins - under the stars in the Senate Rose Garden. 'Imagining the Capital' celebrates 100 years of lifestyle, politics, and architecture in Canberra through film and sound from the national audiovisual collection, as part of Centenary of Canberra celebrations. A host of special guests will perform live music.
