NOEM’s futuristic Spaceship House is controlled by a smartphone A UFO-esque prefab home has popped up in the ritzy Spanish neighborhood of La Moraleja. Architecture studio NOEM designed the futuristic home, fittingly named the Spaceship House, with sci-fi-inspired elements and energy-efficient technology. The elevated metal-clad home is more than just its looks—the Spaceship House boasts a Star Wars-inspired control panel and home automation inside so that it can be remotely controlled from a smartphone. The Spaceship House is made up of three prefab modules built of Pyrenean wood in local factories that were then assembled onsite for a total construction time of 14 weeks from design to completion. The central module, which houses the kitchen and bathroom, serves as the “technological hub of the ship” and is installed with a Star Wars-inspired control panel that the client uses to monitor and program all of the house functions, from lighting levels to sound systems. With the touch of a button, the house can be automated to perform tasks such as closing the shutters at specific times of day or changing the lighting intensity and color to achieve different atmospheres. The other two modules—one containing the bedroom-studio and the other the living area—take advantage of the site’s lush landscape through large panoramic windows. The architects raised the home onto 12-feet-high stilts to optimize the views and to give the impression that the structure had just touched ground on Earth. Smart building technologies, including 10-inch-thick wool insulation and a heat-recovery ventilation system, earned the project a Class A energy certification.
