Pimlico School 1971 - 2010

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

A short film in memory of the former Pimlico school. Commissioned by the GLC (Greater London Council ), designed by architect John Bancroft and built in the late 1960's. Bancroft's futuristic vision of schools was captured in concrete.. I went there between 1972-76 and had a great time learning from some really great teachers.

Comments

  1. Thank you so much for your film, Michael Guihen! I come to it rather late, but, for me, John Bancroft's daughter, very moving to see. I know Dad was immensely proud of the ethos of the school. He would have been delighted to see everyone looking so lively and great!
  2. From day 1 through to 1975
  3. I was Head Girl in 72 - 73 and was so overawed by the building. From a small girls grammar school in chelsea to this major development was a real culture shock. Loved it though the music was second to none. I went to see the Queen in her 25th anniversary at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, showed Harold Wilson round the building and acted as host to Sir Dougllas Barder (Battle of Britain hero) when he visited. It was a privelege being chosen as Head Girl and now i look back it was the start of a very successful career. So whilst many will "diss" the building the education and opportunities were second to none and for working class kids from chelsea and victoria was a very real opportunity to go far. Fond memories of this time and a BIG hi to all my classmates.
  4. Luke Reader, was there 1970-76.  Thank you for the video.
  5. I was there since it opened until 78... great times, good friends and teachers..
  6. I was there from 73-76, when my sister had to do her O levels in the gym at 100 degrees. I had a lot of fun at Pimlico, made many lasting friendships, but parents took me out cause I lazed about and bunked off a lot and my older sisters hadn't achieved much there. The Smile maths course was shit. Mr Campbell in TD was my form teacher and I remember Waskowicz (art), Paige-Jones (science), Miss Jones (French), Mr Wilson (maths - boo), Straker Wells (Latin), Miss Chalk (humanities), Miss Moberly (English), Miss Lemon (home economics!!). Miss Pament conducted the orchestra and encouraged me in music (which was amazing then: they had a practice block over the road and really good concerts). A proper dancer, Rosemary Butcher, taught us contemporary dance and was brilliant. Hurtwood was great. This little film made me cry because although that amazing building had its disadvantages it shouldn't have been demolished. Now it seems like an incredible privilege to have been taught there.
  7. Where has the video gone, I've not yet seen it. I see a few names below that were in my year and one from my class.
  8. How sad is this, The male register as follows: AHMED, BYRNE, COOK, DANSLOW, DRIVER, FREESTONE, HONEYMAN, JAMES . KADAZ, KOVACS, LLORENTE, MARTIN, NARAYANAN, PHILLIPS, TAYLOR, THOMPSON, WILKINSON. MR Bright was my form tutor for the last year.

  11. Thanks for all the comments, keep it up : )
  12. I still miss the old times! I was there till they started demolishing parts of the building.
  13. I was there 1979 through to 1984. Loved the building (even if it did get a bit hot/cold). Lupus street is not the same with the new white box.
I remember Miss Creasy for art, Mr Barnard for Maths, Mr Cornish for history, Mr Ianson and Mr Cunningham for PE, Dave Sheppard for Creative arts....
  14. Sad to see the old gal gone. Mostly shit times had at that school, but some happy. I only remember a few of the teachers names now, I had Mr Hindes as head of year? Mr Singh (RIP) as kick ass history teacher, Mr Barlow was our form tutor. I was there 90-94ish (got expelled in final year, lol)
  15. I was there from 1971-1978. I had a great time mixing with all the trendy kids from Hampstead, I lived in Clapham (which wasn't quite so upmarket in those days). Teaching wasn't so fantastic as most of the teachers were only 21 and straight out of university.
  16. Zoe Hearne - attended from 85 - 90, has Mr Rastogi for a Form teacher and General Science, A cool maths teacher whose name I can't remember, I think he see to called himself the "Equaliser" and had maybe a background in the music biz? Mr Fern for Art.  Mr Thornely for French and I think Mr Parker for Geography. Best friends were Sally Tyson, Emma Davies, Josephine Thomas,  Lara Tarlo and Bridget Mason.
  17. Pimlico academy is sick I'm starting in September
  18. Brought back loads of memories! Was there 83-88....Form tutor Mr Nichols
  19. I went there between 1997-2000. The best years of my school life. Will always remember this school fondly.
  20. I attended Pimilico from1978 to 1983 (sixth form) 1983-84.  I remember Hurtwood.  Great times. Mr Nichols was my maths teacher.  Nice man.  I had a great French teacher (Miss Brouselenge (can't remember proper spelling)) but still remember what I learnt in her lessons to this day. I remember Mr Barnard and Miss Calder.  I was in form 18 through to 58. Met some good friends there.  My best friend now also attended Pimilico. Still in touch with a few others mainly via facebook.
