Written & Performed by: Polygrains From the album: Adore Primo (self-released, 2013) www.polygrains.com www.soundcloud.com/polygrains Shooting Polygrains aka Vasilis Moschas at THE MET HOTEL was like doing reperage for a 70s-retro-futuristic-neo-noir movie. THE MET is the best and most beautiful hotel in Thessaloniki. I don't care if this sounds like advertising; it's 100% true. An amazing space, wonderfully designed to the last detail and home of a spectacular contemporary art collection, including 25 works at the hotel's common areas and one in each room, by the likes of Bruce Nauman, Jenny Holzer, Jorge Pardo, Erwin Wurm, Thomas Struth. The video was shot at the hotel's Asian restaurant, designed by Andy Martin Architects, with its unique psychedelic carpet created by a Japanese cartoon artist. In his well-mannered stylish Londoner's attitude, his synth on his lap and a small amplifier on the floor beside him, Vasilis performed for us what he describes to be an "eclectic electronic menagerie of beats, bleeps and shrieks". Walking around the dark-lit corridors and sun-drenched passageways, while Chryse was photographing him, he reminded me of an unexpected crime novel hero, a bit timid and reserved but faithful to his mission and beliefs no matter what. True to form, he takes full responsibility for his work. His plural stage name is purposefully misleading; Polygrains is a strictly solo act. Visibly uncomfortable under the spotlight, his performances carry an air of complete exposure and therefore become utterly engaging, as was the case for this wonderful bandrop session. (L.C.)
