Religion in America #30: "America's Religions," Ch. 33 Anglican Renaissance

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

In this lecture/discussion video from my Spring 2014 Religion in America class at Marist college, we explore the themes discussed in the textbook for the class (America's Religions: From Their Origins to the Twenty-first Century 3rd. ed., by Peter Williams), focusing on Chapter 33, "Anglican Renaissance." In this chapter, we discuss the changing situation of Anglicans/Episcopalians in the late 19th and early 20th century. We review the conceptions of "High Church" and "Low Church" and introduce the conception of "Broad Church". We also discuss the role of Episcopalians in the Protestant Establishment, as being in the upper-tier of churches, and attracting a number of converts in the upper and middle classes in America. We finish by noting the importance of their patronage of the arts, particularly architecture, and thinking about why the arts would be important for enhancing the environment of liturgically oriented religious services. Since videos discussing religion tend to get a number of polemical, poorly informed, and off-topic comments, I've set comments to require review and approval before they'll be publicly posted.
