Rochester, NY-- The Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County's Rundel Memorial Building Exterior Lighting System Wins Prestigious Award (Wednesday, February 12, 2014) -- Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has presented the City with the prestigious Harley Hill Excellence in Lighting Award in recognition of the exterior lighting system at the Rundel Memorial Library Building of the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County, NY. The all-LED, energy-efficient system highlights the architectural beauty of this building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It also enables the City to enhance the building's exterior with colored and themed lighting to coincide with local and national observances and celebrations. "The LED lighting system outside the Rundel Memorial Library serves the dual purpose of preserving energy and drawing attention to one of Rochester's most important historic landmarks through the beauty of light," said Mayor Warren. "I want to thank the Illuminating Engineering Society for recognizing this important project and the City's commitment to innovation and sustainability." The Rundel Memorial Building, located at 115 South Avenue, is the landmark building on the campus of the Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County, NY and is the downtown branch of the Rochester Public Library. In 1997, the Central Library expanded when it built the Bausch & Lomb Public Library Building directly across the street from the Rundel Memorial Building. The Rundel Memorial Building is a steel framed structure with reinforced concrete and faced in smooth Indiana limestone. It consists of three main floors, a mezzanine, two underground levels, a catwalk level above the river, and a penthouse area for equipment. It began construction in the early 1930's, and represents an integration of Beau-Arts planning and massing with Art Deco detailing and stylization. The building is sited along the east side of the Genesee River directly above the Johnson and Seymour millrace and Rochester Subway. The building was constructed in part with monies from the estate of Morton W. Rundel and with a grant from the Public Works Administration. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
