Rome: Back-Street Riches

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

In this third of three shows on the Eternal City, we'll explore this grand metropolis — so rich in art and culture — on a more intimate scale, delving into its back lanes and unheralded corners. Venturing through the crusty Trastevere district, visiting the historic Jewish Ghetto, and enjoying art treasures in a string of rarely visited churches, we uncover charms of hidden Rome that compete with its marquee sights. © 2012 Rick Steves' Europe

  1. This is the second time I watched this video. But the part of Ostia, I was not able to watch it properly. It was only now that I was able to watched it properly, and appreciate its history. Very informative video.
  2. I traveled for other european cities like London, Madrid, Berlin, Amsterdm and Paris, but for me Rome is definitely unique. In Rome every stepwalk is a dip in the history of mankind, and you walk in streets and avenues from more than 2.000 years of history and enter in buildings who were part of the colossal Roman Empire. There is not a single person who is not hypnotized in front of the Colosseum, Piazza Navona, Fontana di Trevi or The Vatican............ For me Rome and Athens are UNIQUE for sure
  3. I cannot stand that hick trying to pass for "cultured" and "knowledgeable". It's obvious that he repeats what he read in other travel books.
  4. I love your video blogs Rick .... They are intellectually stimulating and really show bits of history ... thank you sexy man
  5. I am traveling to Rome next summer. I have been to Amsterdam, Munich, and London, how will Rome be similar/different to those cities? I live in Denver, Colorado by the way. Thanks in advance everyone
  6. While educational, it is also very enjoyable. Thank you.
  7. Going to Rome in a few weeks. So excited!
  8. Just a little nitpicking here: in the carbonara you must use the "guanciale" (from the pork's cheek and neck) and not the "pancetta" (from the pork's belly). It's more tasty and flavoured (and it has more fats), often seasoned with garlic and herbs, and it is left to mature for more time than the pancetta, so it's usually more crusty when cooked.
  9. wow
  10. Does anyone know the peaceful sort of guitar music playing in the background from 19:09 on??? Can I find it anywhere in full or was is tailor-made for this video??? I'd love to use it for a project so if anyone has an idea where to find it, I'd really appreciate it! :) thank you!!!
  11. ...incredibly out of touch people here that expect Rick Steves to personally answer their posts....and demanding language that is a real turn off.....

  19. Rick - my fiance and I are going to Rome for our honeymoon March 2016. Do you have a favorite place to dine that would be both romantic and memorable? We are doing the normal tourist things, the Vatican, the Coliseum etc. but we also would like to do some things off the beaten path that only locals would do/know about. Any advice would be great!
  20. Ok Rick, ma di carbonara te ne poteva dare un po di più! ;)
