San Fransisco - Electricity Lines

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Footage taken in May 2013 while on vacation in San Fransisco. Interesting power lines and transformers were observed as well as beautiful art-deco houses. The steep zig-zag street is Lombart Street, we did a quiz type interview for a Boston Radio Station. Did spot an analogue I-55 meter, most meters were replaced by digital types.

  1. Some of key differences with the American distribution system it they typically use 4 wire 3 phase and a neutral at medium voltage, and connect single phase pole transformers "pole pigs" with 120v 0v 120v secondaries, 1 transformer for almost every building some are shared, where in Australia and NZ typically only 3 wire balanced 11kv is used with 1 large 3 phase delta star transformer supplying many houses and businesses 240v/ 415v. When I was in Vagus I found live LV bare wires left fallen on the pathway, an no one could care less. Also found LV service cables, attached to building with no insulators or strain relief, just a hole in the wall or roof, cable slips under a tile, and cables were strung roughly ad -hoc and everywhere like a rats nest, it was horrible.
  2. Unbelievable that the people who run this city allow all these wires. Here in Holland every little detail that influences the street image has to be approved - i'm pretty sure that wires dangling across the streets is the last thing they will approve here :-)
  3. How did you use your 240 volt stuff on American 120 volt mains, hope you enjoyed America.
  4. 3:30... That was no rectifier box... That was a cable TV Amplifierbox
  5. You know that San Fran still has a functioning DC grid?  http://spectrum.ieee.org/energy/the-smarter-grid/san-franciscos-secret-dc-grid
  6. look up "Youtube Center add-on for Firefox. You can customise loads of settings including how it buffers.
  7. why are they taking down the coax system?
  8. yes I agree. The electric lines on US streets look so ugly and a right mess. No wonder 90% of the power line/transformer arcing/explosion videos on YT are in the US. They should cut down trees that are too close to prevent branches touching before it happens. Slightest bit of wind and theres a power cut. I've never ever seen a UK power line arcing on YT or outside. Our system and most of europe is much better.
  9. When I was in the US I was amazed how shabby there electricity lines were. In New York suburbs some poles were leaning over with two or three pole pigs on them. In the UK you would never get that, everything is firmly braced and most power lines are underground towns and residential areas.
  10. Wait, you are dutch?
  11. Jacob shut up! Mighty fine parenting :-)
  12. Funny to see tourist videos of my home town! I hope You enjoyed Your trip,it's a very nice place to visit and has some great museums. I see you were interested in the cable cars, You make it to the cable car barns and powerplant?
  13. wat een spaghetti daar
  14. Would love to see more footage from SF if you have it.
  15. That's all PG&E wiring and we have a 200 amp smart meter too. I honestly hate smart meters
  16. That's about 4hours from me
  17. Wow! I was there last week!
  18. Some of it is 13.2 kV, and I have heard some lines are up to one mV, though most in my area are 11 kV and some 161 subtransmission lines
  19. [NL] Ja, 120 / 208 Volts en 277 / 480 Volts [EN] Yes High Voltage distribution 7200V 14400V 28800 kV 34500 V up to 750 kV
  20. [NL] Hebben ze in de US ook krachtstroom aansluitingen?? [EN] Do they have Highvoltage connections in the US?? Greetings from germany!
