Shokunin | How to dye kimono

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

TURN ON CAPTIONS ("CC" OR ・・・) FOR ENGLISH SUBTITLES Today's shokunin spotlight is Takeda Senko, a Nagoya family crest black kimono dyeing facility. Of course, they dye colored kimono and other items as well! http://takedasenko.jp/ Many thanks to them for letting us film inside their factory!! We actually recorded this over a year ago, and also have a couple other shokunin videos to finish editing as well before we start interviewing new shokunin. Unfortunately the editing takes us a LONG time to finish by ourselves, hence the super long wait... ^^;; Hopefully the others will be up more quickly! Shokunin (職人) is the Japanese word for craftsman or craftswoman. These are the men and women who preserve Japan’s traditional legacy of hand-crafting products including swords, drums, fans, pottery and more. Many shokunin use crafting methods that have been passed down for hundreds of years, sometimes within a single family. But because most things can be mass-produced these days, shokunin, and their skills, are disappearing. So, we want to help protect Japan’s historical arts by spreading awareness and broadening their market within Japan and overseas! You can support Japan's shokunin by spreading awareness of their crafts, (and of course purchasing them, if you want!) Although, most shokunin don't have websites that ship overseas. You may unexpectedly stumble upon a shokunin's workshop when you're in Japan, so don't hesitate to drop in! Every craftman/woman and artisan we've met so far has been incredibly kind and happy to show us around! ★ Patreon! http://patreon.com/rachelandjun ★T-shirts & Merch! http://rachelandjun.spreadshirt.com/ ►FOLLOW US *:゚*。⋆ฺ(*´◡`) Jun's Kitchen ⇀ http://www.youtube.com/JunsKitchen Adventure and vlog videos ⇀ http://www.youtube.com/RachelandJunExtra Twitter ⇀ https://twitter.com/RachelAndJun Instagram ⇀ http://instagram.com/rachelandjun Vine ⇀ https://vine.co/u/1318200044255903744 Facebook ⇀ https://www.facebook.com/RachelAndJun ►EQUIPMENT (Amazon affiliates links) _〆(・∀ ・ ) Camera ⇀ Panasonic Lumix FZ-1000 (http://goo.gl/htPRH1) Secondary camera ⇀ iPhone 6 (http://goo.gl/lsnKcy) Editing program ⇀ Sony Vegas Pro 13 (http://goo.gl/osEzUo) ►MUSIC ♪♪(o*゜∇゜)o~♪♪ Jonathan Rich - Piano Theme (https://goo.gl/TZ5mRK) Amarante - Breathe In (https://goo.gl/22YVkf) Life has no limits! 1. I really like your videos
I really like Kimonos :)I find it really interessting how Kimonos are dyed. :) Could you please make more videos to that topic?
For the Topic of kimonos I have a question for you. Kimonos are one sized I have heard and that a big Problem for me because I`m simply to tall with 180 cm. Is there a possibillity to find one for my size.
  2. so pretty omg. the colors are so pretty and the details are fantastic...
  3. Wow, I'm loving these shokunin videos so much. And I had no idea that this is how kimono are dyed. It always fascinates me to see a craft passed down in a family over generations.
  4. THE GREEN IS SO PRETTY
  5. Those are GORGEOUS
  6. this was such a beautiful video! as a costume design student, i appreciate this "behind-the-scenes" type stuff so much! What a wonderful art to pass down in the family.
  7. I came for the cats, staying for your great information.
  8. What's the best way of having a kimono made while in the US? Are there websites or craftsmen here that make them? Any help is appreciated!
  9. as a textile artist, this is some of the most beautiful fabric I have ever seen! this man is amazingly talented
  10. That part about the kamon was really interesting. I'm still trying to find mine: 近森 - family name. My father was born in Kyoto and moved to Canada in 1956. My wife and I had a typical western wedding (She's Irish-American) and she never got a chance to wear a kimono for a traditional Japanese family wedding photo (Even in North America, we try to keep some of the traditions of the old country).

I'm sure my jaw would drop and shatter on the ground to see what the prices are with regards to getting a proper mon-tsuki for myself as well as for my wife.
  11. These are beautiful, and as I studied textile design it was a special treat to see the process. Thank you!
  12. What are the differences between yukata and kimono?
  13. Is there any way I can learn to dye my own kimono(not using this method and not necessarily for this outcome)? Or paint them? Or embroider them? Or just any sort of embellishment?
  14. This week on How It's Made...
  15. So pretty. (*__*)
  16. is there a video to watch how the special japanese sewing technique is done?
it got me very curious after watching this video
  17. I just recently grew to love Japanese culture, but even if I didn't, I could honestly say this man is a professional artist!😄 I thank not only Rachel and Jun for this video, but also Takeda-san! Keep going!
  18. A plain black yukata, sign me up.
  19. It makes you wonder how difficult this dyeing-process must have been without those machines O.o... Great video!
  20. its so annoying hearing from people that aren't japanese that wearing kimono is only for japanese people, and if you wear one its "cultural appropriation" but when you talk to actual japanese people they encourage foreigners to wear and spread their culture.
