Space Launch System – NASA’s bet in the space race

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Space Launch System – NASA’s bet in the space race. Or very expensive gamble With the retirement of the last Space Shuttle in late 2011, NASA lost capability to launch manned crew to the International Space Station, relying heavily on Russian Space Program to send its astronauts to ISS. SLS or Space Launch System it is. A program to develop space rockets that will take NASA in to 21st century. However unlike SpaceX or BlueOrigin rockets, NASA’s SLS at least at first won’t be re-usable, eventually part of the SLS stage 1, engine section, will be recoverable. Space Launch System consist of two rockets, SLS Block 1, powered by four RS-25 engines. The core stage will be 8.4 meters in diameter. Initial flights will use modified RS-25D engines left over from the Space Shuttle program. The core stage will be common across all currently planned evolutions of the SLS, i.e. being 8.4m in diameter and 64.6m tall, displacing some 85 tons empty and nearly 1000 tons when fully fuelled. Two boosters and the 1st stage core should provide 8.87 million pounds or 4.0 million kilograms of thrust or enough to lift 70 tons of cargo in to Geostationary Orbit. Heavier version of the rocket SLS Block 2 is expected to have even greater thrust as it’ll need to lift 130 tons in to LEO or 50 tons to Moon or Mars. The Space Launch System, or SLS, will be designed to carry the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle [MPCV], as well as important cargo, equipment and science experiments to Earth's orbit and destinations beyond Earth’s Orbit. The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (Orion MPCV) is an spacecraft intended to carry a crew of four astronauts to destinations at or beyond low Earth orbit (LEO). Currently under development by NASA for launch on the Space Launch System, Orion is intended to facilitate human exploration of asteroids, the Moon and of Mars and to retrieve crew or supplies from the ISS if needed. 1. because of the bureaucracy & cost over runs,it wont see an operational day ever & foresee it being scrapped! Space X will be the primary player in any future missions!
  2. How many times "exploration" mission to the moon lol??
  3. NASA SLS really doesnt inspire the crap outta me, to me Elon got it all figured out with interplanetary transit and I am really excited and aswell engaging in life. Even though if they fail I'm sure they shouldn't quit and more opportunities will start opening up with more breaktrough and don't fear failures. Fall often times and you will learn more.
  4. I would like your videos more, except the music is too loud to comfortably enjoy the video. Thanks for your efforts to bring this material to us!
  5. The SLS needs to be scraped. It's a huge waste of money. Let the private sector do the launches. Let NASA focus on building the Nautilus X, then they can do their missions to where ever the Vasimr engine can take them. But first we need to start educating the public about how safe nuclear power really is. Let's see how many people die each year from Nuclear power? Well, if you take out Chernobyl that didn't have a contaminant dome, then the answer is nobody has ever been killed from the industry. Unlike ever other power industry.
  6. nasa needs to move on from SRBs they are dangerous . you cant shut them off .von brown himself hated them. hence no solid rocket boosters in any Apollo mission. second . cost cost cost . we gonna have the same disaster of the F22 raptor. the entire manufacturing processes has too many regions a companies working from different parts of America.
  7. Obsolete
  8. NASA was doing these engine tests over 50 years ago. The reason they have to reinvent the engine due winning the space race. The uninspiring "been there done that" Obama-type attitude from the nation doomed space exploration. So Congress has been devastating NASA's budget since the 70's. Commercial crew programs are scary. You want corporate America's Chinese made spacecraft killing our astronauts?!
  9. This dinosaur is likely to be obsolete before it ever flies.
  10. well seems to me like NASA should put all the money used for SLS and Orion development into SpaceX and get a better and cheaper system sooner...
  11. Build Aeres V instead.
  12. i swear fing solar panels in space make no sense, especially if your going beyond Mars(there is not enough sunlight), Mars' surface(too much dust) or the Moon( 2 weeks of no sunlight!!) , go RTG or LFTR or don't bother, NASA has just become a place to waste money for pollies donors :/. Its why SpaceX and other companies are kicking its arse sigh.
  13. On a serious note: what song is this?
  14. BLAH BLAH BLAG....now that SPACE X is grounded for a year because of the pad explosion its clear that we need the SLS for many reasons. SPACE X is not going to save us from expensive space launch services. i dont want a CHEAP launcher, I WANT A GOOD OR GREAT ONE. all this is moot now as SPACE X recovers from this disaster. 2 rocket loses within a year is unacceptable.
  15. NASA is dead, killed by US government since early 80is by taking money from budget. Now NASA have enough money only to send microwave oven (they call it Rover) on Mars once every 10 years and still politicians to build their career use NASA as tool in politics to cut more budget every year. From greatest space agency on the planet in 60 is politicians turned it in to the joke, greatest enemies to our progress. What our enemies couldn't do it our dirty politicians did and that is a shame. Only thing NASA can do is putting ideas out but none of them are approved by Congress instead trillions of dollars are spent on fake war in Iraq and that was only once and we have been Attacking Irak on three separate occasions. Politicians are our greatest enemies because they have no vision bit one thing they have is greed for money and power and to keep that they are huge spender's but for progress and exploration well for them they can't make any profit so that is too expensive, fucking greedy hores!
  16. with spaceX, bye bye SLS.
  17. I've watched the exploration of space since the Sputnik days but I think NASA has now lost the plot. This Orion system is old fashioned and will probably never fly just like the Constellation system before it. The future now lays with private companies such as Space X if they can get over the recent explosion. NASA needs a complete rethink and rebuild of infrastructure. In the beginning it was the only agency that could conquer space but now it's a has- been
  18. Just curious: Why don't you talk and use text instead. Nothing wrong with it, but it is a little tiring when I get from uni late.
