23 - 25 May Canberra Theatre Celebrating the seamless marriage of music and motion The Australian Ballet returns to Canberra with an unmissable triple bill How do you make a ballet about Parliament House? Garry Stewart, artistic director of Australian Dance Theatre, will answer the question with Monument, his Centenary of Canberra tribute to one of Australia's greatest buildings. Stewart, known for his far-ranging, intellectual approach to dance, worked in consultation with Parliament House architect Aldo Giurgola, using the design principles of the building to shape balletic movement. Complementing Stewart's modern masterpiece are two sublime works from the ballet canon. The Four Temperaments, from the 20th-century genius George Balanchine, uses the Ancient Greek notion of "temperaments" that rule the human body to shape a work of stark geometries and distinct moods. And to send you home swooning is the timeless pas de deux from Christopher Wheeldon's 21st-century masterpiece After the Rain©, an "unspoken love affair consummated on stage". All three works return to basic principles to show the complexity in simplicity and highlight the seamless marriage of music and motion.
