That's one way to beat the property boom: Art-deco homes made of SHIPPING CONTAINERS ready in a couple of weeks... ranging in price from $2000 to $1.4 MILLION www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3092324/Inside-box-Art-deco-homes-shipping-containers-ready-just-weeks-start-little-2000.html ~ With Australia's housing affordability at crisis point, demand for alternative accommodation like transformed shipping containers, is growing at an astounding rate. Jamie Van Tongeren of Container Build Group said his company turned over more than $2.5 million in just the past three months, buying up more than 50 containers a month to transform. The biggest companies specialising in turning the steel boxes into housing, are swamped by upwards of 50 calls a day from potential buyers. While most buyers are attracted to these unique homes because they are relatively cheap and quick to build, costing as little as $20,000, Mr Van Tongeren insists 'the tide is turning'. 'Everyone was all about getting it as cheap as they can get, but now every third or fourth call to our office is about building that mansion from containers,' he said. 'People ask for the best fit-out with marble bench tops, real high end and the best you can get.' He said that an 'average' three bedroom two bathroom home can cost $270,000, installed. 'Our revenue has doubled in the past year,' he added. THE COST OF CALLING A SHIPPING CONTAINER HOME $2000 for a single DIY reconditioned container $3500 for a brand new container $20,000 gets a basic fit-out with bathroom and air conditioning $50,000 for a 'funky boutique finish' $300,000 for a 7 container home on the water One home in Graceville, Queensland, made of 31 shipping containers, sold for more than $1.4 million.
