The 11th Street Diner Restaurant Miami South Beach Food Bar 11th Street Diner 11th Street at Washington Avenue Miami Beach, FL (305) 534-6373 Owners: Steven Schnitzer, Ray Schnitzer, Howard Sanders Sunshine, lush palms, and beautiful beaches got you down? How about beautiful models, high-powered celebrities, gourmet dining, and mind-blowing architecture? There's no rest for the weary, it seems, on the star-studded streets of Miami's South Beach. Life is a constant go-go, what with the glitz, the haut-couture, the non-stop nightlife, the ever-present camera crews. You'd think that somewhere among this buzzing melange of movers and shakers, tourists, and international jet-setters -- somewhere not too far from the sun-warmed beach -- there would be at least one spot where you could grab a good pot roast. The 11th Street Diner, a 1948 dining car-style eatery serving blue plates and more to the "American Riviera," is your ticket. Glittering at the corner where 11th meets Washington Avenue, the diner was built by the Paramount Dining Car Company of Haledon, New Jersey in 1948. For 44 years, the diner served traditional American cuisine in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, until 1992, when it was dismantled, transported to the historic Art Deco District of Miami Beach, and carefully restored by current owners Steven and Ray Schnitzer and Howard Sanders. The diner's sleek look is a natural fit among the deco styling, pretty pastels, and fifties futurama of the other buildings in the district. The diner's good food, reasonable prices, and proximity to South Beach's hotels and nightclubs make it a big draw for an eclectic crowd. "If you look at a map, we are bullseye in the town," says Steven Schnitzer. "The scene is definitely trendy. You've got the fashion industry, the movie industry, the tourists, and you're dealing with people from all over the world." Since the popularity of "MiamiVice" in the 1980's, it seems there's always a camera crew nearby. The diner has made many appearances on film and in advertisements including Gloria Estefan's "See Your Smile" music video. The eclecticism may harry Schnitzer a bit from time to time, but it's all part of the fun. "Occasionally I find myself trying to describe a pot roast to a French couple, but that's the kind of thing I expect and enjoy. We've been fortunate to have basically created a landmark and the city has helped us tremendously." The menu includes meat loaf, roast turkey, omelettes, ribs, and an especially delicious blackened chicken club recommended by Schnitzer himself. So if you're one of the fabulously beautiful, the fabulously wealthy--or even if you're just fabulously hungry--South Beach and the 11th Street Diner make for a perfect stop. - vlog produced by Zennie Abraham Zennie62 Blog http://www.zennie62blog.com - youtube video
