The Case for Abstraction | The Art Assignment | PBS Digital Studios

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

For much of human history, people made art by trying to represent the world as it appeared around them. Until about 100 years ago, when a bunch of artists stopped trying to do that. It was shocking then and it still upsets and confounds today. How are we supposed to deal with art completely removed from recognizable objects? And why should we? This is the case for Abstraction. 2. Sorry but when you mix abstraction with an unknown context you lose my attention. We have one life and if one uses their time to try to understand your art then they waste their very precious time. I'm not saying art has to be immediately forth coming with the ideas it wishes to impart, but it is my opinion that one should not have to wade through a sea of conjecture to understand the meaning behind a single piece of art. This is especially true when they will have to do it all over again when their attention moves.
  3. The narrator says right off the bat: "For much of human history when people set out to make art, they did so by trying to represent things as they appeared in the world around them. And then, about 100 years ago a bunch of artists stopped trying to do that."
That's probably one of the greatest erroneous premises in all of art history...and yet it is one of the most diffuse ideas out there.
  4. They should show these videos in school! so the children really learn about the different styles and eras
  5. i love these "a case for..." videos thanks for putting them out

  12. As for 0:06 - The first greek ceramics from the archaic period were non representational. This one comes later. You talked about it at the end, so I don't quite get the compassion here.
  13. I loved this video, it helped me to appreciate what i thought to be amateurish shapes and colors. Thank you
    .
  14. I've actually seen quite a few IRL from the Dutch artists! I've been going to one museum every month so far this year, and I love how diverse the Dutch museums are. (Especially in my university city, Amsterdam).
  15. This really makes me think of the Semana da Arte Moderna of 1922 that happened in Brazil, many influential brazilian artists were part of it and I would like to know if you have any knowledge about it.
Thank you for the awesome video.
  16. Great job on this :)
  17. It would be amazing to gain access to a transcript of this video.
  18. Wonder if there's a case for that guy who screenshotted and added his own comment on Instagram images then making loads of money out of apparent fair use.
