Top Billing visits the magnificent historic home of Lawson Ricketts

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

This week's location is a beautiful re-imagining of the spirit of old Johannesburg. Built by Sir Thomas Cullinan in 1910, this house has been home to notable families, Dominican monks and now to Lawson Ricketts and his husband from New York. Being over 100 years old, the house is a national monument, and is considered one of the only art nouveau houses left in Johannesburg. The exteriors could not be altered but the interiors were masterfully re-interpreted, and Lawson wanted a dramatic interior to match the dramatic exterior. Many of the house's original features are still in tact and have been made focus points, from the green tiles in the entrance, to the exposed face brick in the kitchen. From a colonial Out of Africa feel downstairs, to the modern ascents upstairs, this house truly reflects the welcoming spirit of Africa. Don't miss this dramatic and historic home on Top Billing this Thursday at 8:30pm on SABC3. http://www.topbilling.com/
