UNMEE MINUTE: Eritrea's Cultural Assets Rehabilitation Program Preserves Rich Architectural Heritage

Concept, photos, videos, examples, construction

Eritreans are preserving and protecting their cultural heritage in the wake of a prolonged period of war proceeded by the Italian colonial period that left numerous Art Deco and Modernist buildings and design motifs in Asmara and other important cities. This "UNMEE Minute' highlights the work of the Cultural Assets Rehabilitation Project (CARP) headed by Naigzy Gebremedhin, who oversees the preservation of architectural treasures and artifacts located in what is known as the Historic Perimeter. Following the success of this UNMEE Minute, I Co-Produced and Directed, and Filmed "City of Dreams," a 52-minute documentary about the unique Modernist architecture of Asmara and the stories of Eritreans who have helped to preserve this one-of-a-kind city in East Africa.
