Victory Over the Sun Futurist Opera at Theater Basel

As a kind of preview of the comprehensive exhibition of art by Kazimir Malevich and the Russian Avant-Garde at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland), Fondation Beyeler presented a production of the Futurist opera Victory Over the Sun during Art Basel in Basel 2015. The opera was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1913. Its creators were composer Mikhail Matyushin, the poets Alexey Kruchonych and Velemir Khlebnikov, and the artist Kazimir Malevich. The opera featured numerous innovations in the realms of music, poetry, set and costume design. It embodied the spirit and artistic energy of the times. The production, which was shown in the Theater Basel, was created in 2013 by the Stas Namin Theatre in Moscow in cooperation with the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
